The Truth About Truth

Hello BW tribe. How has your week been? I am officially done with my fall semester of senior year, so you can imagine how I feel. If your week hasn’t been great, be encouraged to know that this too shall pass, and if it’s going great be fully present for all of it. To my new readers, welcome! You are already loved here and to my regulars welcome back tribe. I can’t believe we have come to the end of the series Can We Be Honest. Let me know in the comment section which week was a straight-out banger for you. What stood out to you the most? I thought what better way to close out the series than to talk about truth?

I recognize the role truth plays in your wellness journey. Not your opinion or thoughts from experts or your favorite influencers, but the truth. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines truth as “the body of real things, events, and facts.” Truth is factual, objective, and timeless. That means truth cannot be true in one place and false in another region and generation. In philosophy, this is called the laws of logic. So if a 75-year-old in a rural village in Kenya applies the truth you behold and see the results, a 25-year-old woman working in the heart of New York should be able to see similar results despite age, country, or region. In the book of John(8:31-32), Jesus said “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” My first point is that, If it’s really the truth, it will set you free not keep you bound.

If you are to get well mentally, emotionally, spiritually, relationally, financially, physically, or in any other area of your life, you have to admit and face the truth for what it is. Most people stay sick and bound not because they can’t get healed or free. It’s simply because they are afraid of finding out the truth. They believe that they won’t be able to bear and handle the truth and crush their overwhelmed soul. So, they settle for staying broke instead of learning about their relationship with money and exposing their limiting beliefs around money. They settle for chronic anxiety rather than doing the digging work to get to the root of anxiety. They surrender to being mentally dull instead of building the discipline of reading and expanding their vocabulary to contribute valuable insights in conversations. They settle for an abusive relationship instead of accepting that the relationship has to end if they are to get healthy and free.

Truth stings and is often politically incorrect. The truth will separate you from the majority’s thinking. You and I may not love the truth as much as we claim to want it because the truth often hurts you before it sets you free. The problem is our society desperately wants authenticity, but celebrates and rewards perfection, polished-up and spotless images of our lives. Unfortunately, real life is not like that. The truth is life is messy, packed with flaws, and rarely is as polished as we have normalized it to be.

There is also the truth about what really happened or did not happen to you and the truth found in God’s Word. The truth about your past experiences and trauma is incredibly powerful when admitted and embraced, but the truth found in God’s word guarantees permanent freedom. In a time where knowledge is in ample supply, yet people are mentally dull and tormented by worry and fear, it shows us how information does not guarantee freedom. The word of God is what truly frees because it is described as a tool that’s “sharper than a two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires in the book” ( Hebrews 4:12). ‘Sword’ indicates that it cuts and the word ‘exposed’ points to the nature of truth. It brings light in areas where darkness had found it’s dwelling place.

So what is my point? Truth at it’s core and it’s purpose is to free. It’s not designed to swell your head or harden your heart, but free you. Free your mind, free your heart, free you from you. We do ourselves a disservice when we assume every piece of positive and feel-good information we consume has the power to free us indefinitely. Some information is there to bring awareness, but God’s word, which is the ultimate truth, not only brings awareness but empowers you to act on that awareness you now have to be fully freed. My prayer is that this series brought awareness in the areas of your spiritual, mental, emotional, and relational wellness. I also intentionally included scriptures in every post throughout the series, because it’s a truth that supersedes the wisdom I shared. It completely frees.

My heart for you is that, you choose to open your Bible and read it as often as you can. Read it with a book you enjoy reading, read it while crying, read it while anxious, read it overwhelmed, read it happy, read it grieving, read it celebrating, read it while doing your inner work, read it broke, read it after the wedding, read it with the baby, read it with the contract, but read the word. It’s the truth that will absolutely free and change your life. Can I be honest with you one more time? There is no way you can stay the same if you read all the posts in this series for the last four months. You now know too much and have God’s word in you to stay stuck, sick, and suppressed. What’s next is to stay applying what you have learned because that is where freedom is found. I love you tribe and I will see you next week before we get into 2025.
